So freshly established The CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav was hoping to make a splash in his new job this week, he certainly succeeded: The company’s streaming service, HBO Max, is currently on everyone’s lipsas various people make exclamations like “Oh, wow, HBO Max is going straight in the shit!or ask questions like, “Why is HBO Max going straight to hell?” It’s buzzbaby!

After angering a whole host of streaming service-related decisions this week, including plans to shelve two nearly completed films (bat girl and Scoob! : The holiday haunt) and the silent removal of many originals from the HBO Max list – Zaslav had a chance to justify his actions during the newly merged company’s second quarter earnings call today. His comments were heavy on ambitious planning, light on respect for the various artists who do the actual content that his company is so aggressively profiting from, and whose work has now been relegated, essentially, a line on an entertainment giant’s tax returns.

As noted Variety, Zaslav repeatedly returned to the word “quality” to justify the cuts; he never said frankly bat girlwhich would have introduced Leslie Grace as the character, and officially fired Michael Keaton at the Bto-fOld, was not said “quality”, but he said that “We are not going to launch a film to make a quarter, and we’re not going to release a movie if we don’t believe in it.

Of course it seems a little coincidence that the movies David Zaslav doesn’t “believe in” happen to be the same movies lined up by his immediate predecessor, Jason Kilar, as part of the company’s bold direct-to-stream movie plan. On the other hand, Zaslav totally for sure not fooled believes in the theater to come the flash film (also starring Keaton), despite star Ezra Miller taking the unorthodox decision to release most of the film’s recent films press letters in the form of sinister police reports and legal deposits. Zaslav assured everyone present that he was “excited” for the film, before becoming, As, the 1,000th consecutive Warner Media executive to promise the company is ultimately will figure out how to effectively rip off the Marvel Formula so they can also pull off multi-billion dollars on their own superhero brands.
