Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is set to miss his season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion through injury, Athleticism understand.
Martial, 26, has suffered a minor hamstring problem and it’s unclear when he will return, although there are hopes he can return for the trip to Brentford on August 13. If he is unable to recover by then, his next chance to feature would come. against Liverpool on August 22.
He left the pitch in Oslo – where United played against Atletico Madrid in pre-season – clutching his leg.
His injury leaves Erik ten Hag potentially short of numbers in the forward line.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who has told United he wants to leave the club earlier this summer, has only featured once in pre-season in their last game against Rayo Vallecano. The 37-year-old left the game before full time after being substituted.
Marcus Rashford, the England international, can also play as a central striker.
Ten Hag was boosted by Jadon Sancho’s return from illness.
Martial returned to the United first team under new manager Erik ten Hag after spending the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla.
The France international hasn’t had much of an impact in La Liga, scoring just one goal in 12 appearances across all competitions.
Prior to that, Martial had scored just once in the first half of the season at United, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick.
But Martial has been in fine form in Ten Hag’s first pre-season as United manager, scoring three goals.
