Director Karan Johar, in the recent episode of Coffee with Karan 7 claims that actor Aamir Khan is responsible for the loss of the tone of Hindi cinema offered by Southern cinema. In conversation with Aamir, theAe Dil Hai Mushkil director said, “There’s been so much success that some of the South Industry movies have given us in terms of Bahubali, RRR, KGFand Pushpa and some of our movies that didn’t work. Is there a change that has happened in our films recently in terms of tonality that KGF where Pushpa has what Hindi cinema actually had. In fact, we abandoned it and you are responsible for it.”
Explaining why he finds Aamir to be responsible for all this, Karan said, “In 2001, you came up with two films Dil Chahta Hai and Riverboth had new sensibilities, both had a new cinematic syntax and then after that you made a movie Rank of Basanti in 2006, then you did Taare Zameen By right after that, with the result you started getting some audiences and filmmakers.”
To which Aamir denied all claims and said, “No, you’re wrong. They were all films from the heart. These films had emotions. They reach the common man. It’s something you relate to. connect emotionally. Rank of Basanti is a very moving film. It affects people at the grassroots.”
Aamir added, “I’m not saying to make action films or crude films. Make good films with great stories, but choose subjects that concern most people. Every filmmaker has the freedom to do what they want. ‘he wants. But when you choose something that most of India is not really interested in… There are niche people who are interested, which most of us don’t realize don’t count. That’s what I feel is the difference.
South Indian films in recent years have had outstanding performances all over the world. But big Bollywood movies like Prithvirajby Ranbir Kapoor shamshera and Ranveer Singh Jayeshbhai Jordaar failed to bring audiences to theaters.
Other than that, the fifth episode of Karan’s chat show ended on a very happy note, with the Sarfaroch actor winning the fast-paced round with 73% of the live audience votes and with Kareena winning the buzzer fast-paced round with a 15-point majority in her prize pool.
